I found that just plain, ordinary inexpensive lotion worked best, softens up the whiskers and makes for the smoothest closest cut and no need for after shave products.
Now through I have a even better solution, don’t shave at all. No irritation at all.
Makes for a very prophet like intellectual look.

I buy the really cheap shaving soap that comes in a tube, like toothpaste. Then, after I shower, while my face is wet (that is important) I apply the shaving soap with a good brush. I haven’t had a cut since, and I used to cut myself or have an irritated face all the time.
