Matthew, I have to ask, how did you get your icon to show up? I set up this wordpress install, installed the theme, etc, etc, and I apparently only *thought* I knew Wordpress well :)

Andrew, thanks! I'll be getting some of those asap. Good way to start the day!

Should have told you this too, you probably need to boost your potassium. I would suggest eating a banana or two a day for a while. It will help those muscles from cramping. Shoulda told you that already, don't know what I was thinking. Good job on the run.

I love Shatner's Has Been album!!! I think "I Can't Get Behind That" is my favorite, but seriously, what an honest and real album. The music's pretty good, too.

Thanks Andrew! Not really that worried about how much I run vs. how much I walk. I just couldn't NOT notice the difference between the first and second runs.

Tonight is a walk night, unfortunately, I would love to get out and run again, but my muscles need the rest. Thanks for all the beginners advice :)

I will check out that music as soon as I slow down enough to do that. Yes, it is amazing how much a shoe can make a difference. I can imagine how running without shoes, if the soles of your feet were tough enough, would be better because you could avoid any blisters(from the shoes) and wouldn't have to worry about the shoe rubbing your foot wrong, but since we have always worn shoes, it is so good to have a good pair that fit your feet. I can always tell if I get the wrong kind. If the arch is too high in my shoe it hurts the bottom of my foot and causes pain for does. Sorry about the Beast hurting your feet, but in my defense it has been about 8 years since I gave you those and they were already worn out by then. As far as the other benefits, definitely get more energy, definitely stabilized my moods, definitely sleep better than I used to. The moods thing is the biggest benefit I have found. Go down to the park and if you start on the other end there are mile markers so you can go 1.5 miles down and then turn around and do a full 3! Try not to time as much and just run as much as you feel like it. If you don't want to try three, start with two! Anyways, proud of you!

Trav, some of the best core workouts I have done have been me on the floor with nothing else but my weight. To add more, you can buy an inexpensive swiss ball and work on squats, crunches, hamstring lifts, etc. Once you have started that and introduced your body to working out like that, you could make the choice to move to free weights in a gym...

I second the weight lifting suggestion... I started seriously weight lifting a year ago and I LOVE it! The New Rules of Lifting for Women is the guide I used, and I think there's a The New Rules of Lifting that came before it and is more geared toward men.

Thanks Sammy! I'm thinking about it. The thing about running is that you don't need equipment (except shoes) or a membership anywhere. Free weights might be an option, just for some simple things. Hell something as simple as crunches and push ups would help build muscle though.

Holy Cow Trav that is awesome. I am excited you are doing this. It is a true journey which is difficult to maintain, but I know you will rock it. I feel the same way about running, but unlike you, after 3 or 4 minutes, I am completely out of breath and have to stop. My body seems fine, but my breathing can't keep up. I need to lose more before really getting into running. I mean, I have lost 80 pounds, but I am still 340 pounds, so it will take time.

You should also look into some weight training. Building muscle will contribute to a higher metabolism as well as additional burning of calories due to more muscle mass.

I am really excited to know you are on this journey. If you ever need support, I am always here!
